What Is A Codec and Why would I need one?

A “Codec” is a technical name for the “compression/decompression of files so that your media player can play it back.  As we begin to understand the importance of creating a digital master of data files from our home movies we have to learn which Codec to choose so that the material will play back.  There are hundreds of Codecs that vary in quality. Listen and learn about the basics of choosing a codec as it relates to the size of the compressed file, speed and quality considerations, the editing platform you will be using such as Final Cut, and how the size of the file affects the size of the hard drive you put the material on.
